Building a Railroad

Track Installation

Now, we have our focal point at which we are going to incorporate our railroad into, We have our substructures installed; ei: electrical conduit to pumps, area lighting, sprinkler/drip supply line, etc. You may also want to make sure you have a electrical outlet nearby to power run your trains. There are only two track types I recommend for O Scale outdoor use, Atlas silver nickel track and the Gargraves phantom silver nickel track.  I am using the Atlas O silver nickel track.

The track is UV resistant. I have found the track to be very durable in all elements of weather.  Most of my track has been in the elements for five years or longer with no adverse effects.

Taking your paper track plan, begin by just placing the track butt to butt to get an understanding of your curve radius and where your track is headed.  I prefer to build the layout in sections, I build 8 foot sections.  Now you have the basic idea of where our track is going. On to the next step - Stanchion and Ladder Line construction.
