Building a Railroad

Ladder Line Roadbed

My ladder line and stanchion system is a simple rigid roadbed system for the O scale track. The roadbed is both very flexible and rigid. Curves as tight as O-36" can easily be achieved.  Together with the adjustable stanchion system, the roadbed is adjustable both vertical and horizontally and can be installed almost anywhere. All my material is available at my local Lowes store.  I imagine Lowes sells these products in all their stores, but I’m not sure.

Here is list of materials for the

ladder line/stanchion system

¼” x 1 35/64” by 8 feet PVC Lattice   Lowes # 209626

⅝” x 1 ½” by 12 feet EverTrue PVC Board  Lowes #113010

1” PVC Schedule 80 Pipe

1 ¼” PVC Schedule 80 Pipe

1” PVC Tee

11/16” - 1 ¼” #12 Jubilee Clamp

#8 x 1 ¼” Deck Screws

4” x ¼” Carriage Bolt

¼” Fender Washers

Cut the ⅝” x 1 ½” Trim Blank into 3” long pieces, On a flat surface, starting at 3” in from the edge of the lattice, screw in the #8 deck screw to secure the cross piece at 6” intervals. I made a jig from some scrap material to aid in the construction. Do so to one side of lattice until length of lattice is complete. It is best to work in sections.  Working on a flat surface, put a few sections of track together on top to the PVC cross pieces, position the other lattice piece, screw a #8 deck screw into lattice as you bend and follow the track resting on the cross members.  Try to keep the track centered on the cross members. Tip - using the Atlas O 6094 track screws, temporarily secure the track to cross member to aid in construction the completed section. You do this same process on all your sections of the ladder line assembly.
