Building a Railroad

Car Barn Construction

With an outdoor layout subjected to the elements of nature, keeping your rolling stock and locomotives out of the element is essential.  I decided to construct a car barn to house my rolling stock and other small track maintenance items.  In the past I would store my rolling stock in the garage.  Having to pick which cars I wanted to run and transporting them all to the layout.

With the car barn at trackside the task of adding cars to the layout will be a breeze.

The car barn is a sealed, insulated, weatherized 4 foot by 3 foot by 30 inch tall structure with a raisable roof section for easier access. The front panel also has a removable wall section to aid in accessing the inside area.  A track spur will enter the barn for easy railing of rolling stock from within the car barn.  An additional exterior track in fron the barn is also in the plan.  Exterior and interior lighting will also be added as well as trackside access doors and station platform to give the realism of an old train building.  The structure is supported by a custom made foundation jack system.  Setting and leveling the structure is done in minutes.  The structure footprint is very minimal and can be placed virtually on any terrain. No trenching or messy concrete footings required.
